Erickson, Link Push Lamar Past SE Louisiana 5-4 In 11 Innings
May 4, 2008
Tim Erickson struck out four in eight innings of relief and Tyler Link hit an RBI single in the 11th inning to lift Lamar to a 5-4 series-clinching win over Southeastern Louisiana at Vincent-Beck Stadium Sunday. Lamar (28-19, 16-8 Southland) won its seventh conference series and extended its lead in the East Division to 1.5 games over Northwestern State. The Cardinals also clinched a berth in the eight-team SLC Tournament, set for May 21-24 in Hunstville, Texas. After a strikeout to open the 11th, Jeremiah Sammy singled to left center and stole second. Following the second strikeout of the frame, Link hit a 2-1 pitch down the line at third and just out of the reach of a diving Casey Summerlin to allow Sammy to score the winning run. It was Link's fourth hit of the day and his eighth of the weekend. Erickson (6-1) earned the win after relieving Matt Gore four batters into the fourth inning. Erickson struck out four and scattered six hits over 117 pitches. It marked his second win out of the bullpen where he threw at least eight innings. Lamar jumped out to a 4-0 lead with single runs in the first and second, and two more in the third. Link opened the game with a single up the middle, moved to third on a balk and wild pitch that came on consecutive pitches, before scoring on Steven Tucker's double to left field. In the second, three-straight singles loaded the bases before Wade Mathis scored on a 6-4-3 double play. An inning later Tucker led off with a bunt single - the second of the day for Lamar - and scored on Travis Dunson's triple to right center.
Gore was cruising along and had retired nine of the first ten batters of the game before getting into trouble in the fourth. He left the game after giving up two runs on a single, two doubles and a hit batter to open the fourth. Brandon Street and Xavier Qualls each had an RBI double to cut the LU lead to 4-2. The Lions tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh on Street's two-run double. For Southeastern Louisiana (24-23, 11-13 SLC), Ryan Collins dropped to 6-3 after allowing the game-winning run in just 1.2 innings, despite three strikeouts. In addition to Link's strong day at the plate that saw him extend his hitting streak to seven games, Tucker went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Sammy posted a 3-for-5 effort. The game was Lamar's fifth extra-inning contest of the year - with all five coming in the last ten games and against SLC opponents. LU is now 4-1 in them. On Tuesday, Lamar will travel to Houston for its final midweek game of the season. The contest is a make-up game from the March 18 contest that was postponed due to weather. First pitch at Cougar Field is set for 6:30 p.m. |
