Lamar Welcomes SFA To Town For SLC Home Opening Series
March 19, 2008
The Lamar baseball team will play host to Stephen F. Austin in a three-game series at Vincent-Beck Stadium, beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The games will be the Cardinals' first Southland contests at home this season and will kick-off an eight-game homestand which also includes visits from UTPA and Central Arkansas next week. Lamar is 11-7 overall and 2-1 in SLC action after taking two of three at Texas-Arlington last weekend. The Cardinals are hitting .276 this season and lead the league with a .972 fielding percentage. LU's 11 team victories are one behind Sam Houston for tops in the conference, while its 3.39 walks allowed per game are also second in the SLC. Junior first baseman Steven Tucker paces the Cardinals with a .390 batting average and is tied with junior outfielder Tyler Link as both sport a team-best .475 slugging pct. Lamar is 7-2 at home this season after going 23-12 a year ago, including a 12-4 mark in Southland games. SFA comes to town with a 9-8 record and a 1-2 slate in SLC play following a series loss to SE Louisiana in Nacogdoches. While the teams haven't played since last season's series at SFA, the clubs did see one another for three days to begin the season at the Al Ogletree Classic in Edinburg, Texas. The Lumberjacks went 1-2 with a win over UTPA and one-run losses to Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Kevin Croft's .362 average leads a group of seven Lumberjacks who are hitting over .300. As a team, SFA is third in the SLC with a .306 average, first with 18 home runs and second with 36 steals. Both teams were rained out of their mid-week games on Tuesday. Lamar leads the all-time series 20-5 and has won seven-straight at Vincent-Beck over SFA. In fact, prior to last season's Sunday win by the 'Jacks, LU had won five-in-a-row in the series.
First pitch for Thursday and Friday is set for 6:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday. All three games can be heard via the internet at lamarcardinals.com, with Friday's game over-the-air on KLVI 560-AM. Harold Mann will have the call on all three games with a 10-minute pregame. |
