Lamar Baseball Hosts Houston Tuesday Night
April 28, 2008
Coming off a 3-1 week that saw Lamar take two of three conference road games, the Cardinals return home for a four-game homestand, beginning with Houston Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium Lamar is 26-17 on the season and 16-7 at home, while Houston is 26-17 and 7-10 on the road. The Cardinals are hitting .278 as a team and have ridden their pitching staff on its recent string of six wins in its last eight games. Over that stretch, the LU hurlers have posted a 4.50 earned run average and have struck out 44 while holding opponents to a .256 avg. Lamar has also gone 3-0 in 1-run games as well. Redshirt freshman Taylor McInnis is scheduled to make his first career start on Tuesday for Lamar. This season he has struck out two and allowed three hits in 2.2 innings over four appearances. He will be opposed on the mound by Ty Stuckey, who is 2-3 with a 5.55 ERA in 15 appearances. Houston enters on a three-game losing streak after dropping a road series at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Cougars are 8-0 this year against Southland Conference teams. On Wednesday they will host SLC-leader UTSA in Houston. UH leads the series 45-23 and has won the last three including both meetings last year. The Cougars took a 7-1 win at Cougar Field on March 6 and a 17-10 extra-inning decision at Vincent-Beck 21 days later. The teams have split the last eight games in Beaumont dating back to 1993. The two teams were scheduled to meet earlier this season on March 18 at Cougar Field but wet weather in the Houston area forced that game to be pushed back to May 6. The game can be heard on KLVI 560-AM with Harold Mann on the call. Prior to the game the Lamar women's tennis team will be recognized for their recent SLC Tournament championship and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
