Lamar Rebounds From Loss With 84-67 Win Over Nicholls State In Home Finale
March 6, 2008
It was the way Senior Day should be everywhere. Lamar came out with a lot of emotion and rode it all the way to an 84-67 win over Nicholls State to clinch a share of its first Southland Conference regular-season title in 24 years at the Montagne Center Thursday. To say Lamar (19-9, 13-2 Southland) came out on fire would be an understatement. The Cardinals opened up an 18-2 lead thanks to 6-of-7 effort from 3-point range in the first 4:37. The lead ballooned to 40-16 on Currye Todd's trey with 5:17 left in the half. At that point, Lamar was shooting 63 percent overall and 9-of-11 for 82 percent from outside. The Cardinals led 46-36 at the half. Nicholls closed the gap to 10 points, 56-46, on a Ryan Bathie three with just under 10 minutes remaining but Lamar answered with an 18-5 run to stretch the lead back to 23 with 4:08 left. Lamar finished the game 17-of-26 from behind the arc for a season-high 65.4 percent. The 17 triples are the third-most in a game in Lamar history. Lamar's three seniors - Darren Hopkins, Lamar Sanders and Todd - combined for 44 points, 15 rebounds and 16 assists. Sanders nearly posted the second triple-double in school history with eight points, 10 boards and nine assists. He recorded the first one last season against Louisiana Tech. Hopkins had 20 points with five 3-pointers and Todd finished with 16 and four triples. But for all the numbers the eldest Cardinals produced, junior Kenny Dawkins had his best game in recent weeks. The LU point guard scored a season-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting with five 3-pointers, three assists and zero turnovers.
For Nicholls State (9-21, 4-11), Anatoly Bose finished with 18 points, Adonis Gray had 16 and Ryan Bathie added 13. That group was responsible for eight of the Colonels' nine baskets from outside. Lamar will play its final regular-season game on Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana at 3 p.m. The Cardinals can clinch the No. 1 seed in next week's SLC Tournament and the outright conference title with a win. |
