Box Score

KATY, Texas (AP) -- Rod Epps scored 24 points to lead Texas-Arlington to an 81-75 upset of second-seeded Lamar in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament Thursday.

Epps was 9-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, to lead the seventh-seeded Mavericks (19-11).

Lamar (19-11) trailed 73-60 with 5:30 remaining but went on a 13-3 run, including eight straight points by Kenny Dawkins, to pull within 76-73 with 2:57 to go. But the Cardinals were held to just two points the rest of the way and shot 36 percent in the second half.

The Mavericks outrebounded Lamar 38-29 and hit seven of 14 from 3-point range. Jermaine Griffin had 20 points, and Anthony Vereen added 15. Roger Guignard scored 13, including eight in the second half.

Lamar, which lost two of its last three regular season games to share the Southland title with Stephen F. Austin, was led by 19 points from Dawkins.
