March 10, 2008

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - Casey Clendenon and Russell Helson each turned in their lowest single-round scores of the spring to lead the Lamar men's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the General Jim Hackler Championship on Monday.

Both LU golfers were in a tie for 14th after the first 36 holes but Clendenon recorded the second-lowest round of the day with a one-under 71. His round included two birdies and a bogey as he finished tied for fourth at five-over 221.

After opening his round with a par, Helson went bogey, double-bogey before posting birdies at the sixth and 12th holes to match his first-round score of 73. He also finished in the top-10 at 223, tied for ninth.

Hugues Joannes and Justin Harding each counted an 80 toward Lamar's final-round score of 304 for a two-day total of 909.

Leroux Ferriera had an 83 for a 243 final tally.

Wake Forest, who was tied with Lamar after the first day at 605 and 16 strokes back of tournament host Coastal Carolina, won the team title after a final round 292 propelled the Demon Deacons to a three-shot win over Florida State.

Lamar will be back in action later this week when it travels to Laredo, Texas, for the Border Olympics, Friday-Saturday at the Laredo Country Club.
