Lamar Takes Second At Border Olympics
March 15, 2008
LAREDO, Texas -- The Lamar golf team climbed two spots on the final day to finish in second place in the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club Saturday. The Cardinals entered the day in a tie for fourth but a final round 289 saw them pass tourney-host Houston and 3-time Division II National Champion South Carolina-Aiken for the runner-up spot with a 54-hole total of 872. Arkansas followed its tournament-low 281 in Thursday's second round and fired a steady 291 to take the team crown by five shots ahead of Lamar. USC-Aiken finished in third at 881, nine shots back of LU. Casey Clendenon and Justin Harding continued to lead Lamar as they finished tied for fifth and alone in sixth, respectively. Clendenon sandwiched a 69 between a pair of 73s for a on-under-par 215, while Harding was steady with his 71-73-72--216 even-par total. Russell Helson fired a final-round 70 to tie for 18th at 222. Hugues Joannes' final 18-hole score of 75 was not used toward the team total but he did finish with a 223 for a tie for 27th. Leroux Ferreira tied for 35th at 75-76-74--225. Lamar's next tournament will be March 23-25 when it travels to Awendaw, S.C. for the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate.
