Cardinal Men Fall to Iowa 6-1

Results

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the No. 49 Iowa Hawkeyes Wednesday afternoon at the Cardinal Courts.

The Cardinals drop to 5-10 on the year with the loss while the Hawkeyes improve to 7-3 with the win.

The Hawkeyes started the match by winning the doubles point by taking all three doubles matches. Bart van Monsjou and JP Ritchie handed LU's Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz an 8-4 loss at No. 1, Reinoud Haal and Gregory Holm defeated Allan Gomes and Diego Snyder 8-1 at No. 2 while Christian Bierich and Austen Kauss took down Mario Janjic and David Wanja 8-4.

In singles play the Cards picked up their lone point when Janjic fought back after dropping the first set 6-4 to collect a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ritchie at No. 3. Lamar was not able to score another point in the contest, as Iowa lived up to their top 50 ranking.

Bart van Monsjou defeated Kanczula 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Bogusz dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Bierich at No. 2 and Snyder fell 6-2, 6-1 to Haal at No. 4. In the match at No. 5 Tommy McGeorge knocked out Gomes 6-3, 6-1 while Wanja lost to Holm 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Cardinals will be back in action next Tuesday when they host another Big 10 foe as Northwestern comes to the Cardinal Courts at 2 p.m.
