Kasagule Earns Third SLC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Feb. 13, 2008
BEAUMONT - After another record breaking performance on the track over the weekend, Lamar University's Francis Kasagule picked up his third Southland Conference indoor track athlete of the week honors of the season. Kasagule set a new Lamar University and Southland Conference record in the mile run as he turned in a 4:03.75 at the Red Raider Invitational on Saturday. His performance was 1.07 seconds faster than the previous SLC record of 4:04.82 run by Sammy Unberhagen of Texas State in 1996. After the mark was converted to the NCAA's 200 meter flat track standards and converted for altitude using the NCAA conversions, his time was 4:01.76 which bested the SLC record by more than three seconds. His time is also the eighth fastest time in the NCAA this season. This is the eighth athlete of the week honor Kasagule, who is a two time NCAA All American in cross country, has earned in his career. He collected two awards during the cross country season in the fall, along with three during the 2007 track season. He collected two during the indoor season and one in the outdoor season last year. Kasagule and the rest of the Cardinals track team will be back on the track on February 22nd and 23rd when they run in the Southland Conference championships at the Yeoman Field House at the University of Houston.
