Koenck Named Indoor Track Athlete of the Year

March 3, 2008

FRISCO, Texas - Lamar senior Clerc Koenck repeated as the Indoor Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Track Performer while sophomore Francis Kasagule earned his second straight Outstanding Track Performer award.

Koenck, who earned the same distinction in women's cross country and also earned two Athlete of the Week awards during the indoor season, scored a meet-high 22.5 points at the SLC championships in Houston on February 22-23. She won the Mile run with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:47.16 (15 seconds ahead of second place) and took first in the 3000-meters with a time of 9:48.50. She also ran the last leg of Lamar's Distance Medley team which took first in the event with a time of 12:13.96.

In addition to her Athlete of the Year award, Koenck was also named the Outstanding Track Performer for the second consecutive year.

Kasagule was named Outstanding Track Performer after winning the mile with a time of 4:14.37, finished second in the 3000 Meters with a time of 8:17.07 and anchored the DMR to a second straight SLC championship. He also won three Athlete of the Week awards during the regular season.

Both Kasagule and Koenck will be in action this weekend when they run in a last chance meet at the University of Notre Dame, in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA indoor championship. Both runners enter the weekend ranked 17th in the nation in their respective races, Koenck in the mile and Kasagule in the 3,000 meter run.
