Sita Waru, a former Southland Conference track standout and seven-time SLC Athlete of the Year, is in her fifth season as the assistant track and field coach at Lamar.

Waru, who has her USATF level two coaching certification in distance, works with the Carinal distance runners and assists with the day-to-day operations of the track and field program. She also assists with the program's recruiting efforts and was instrumental in the signing of Lamar's four New Zealand student-athletes.

Waru, a three-time Southland Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year, has played a key role in the development of the men's and women's cross country teams.

Under her direction the women's team has won three straight cross country titles and the men's team collected their first championship in the fall of 2006.

Waru has coached 14 individual conference champions, 42 all-conference performers, four national qualifiers and one All-American.

A 2002 graduate of McNeese State, Waru ran collegiately for the Cowgirls, earning 17 individual titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She also represented New Zealand in the 2000 World Cross Country Meet in Villamoura, Portugal.

Prior to joining the LU coaching staff, Waru served as an assistant for S.J. Walsh Middle School in 2002. She also earned experience during the summer of 1999 as an assistant for the Whakatane Athletic Club in Whakatane, New Zealand.

She married Daniel Ewell in Decmeber 2006.
