Lamar Sweeps SLC Golfer Of The Month Awards

March 27, 2008

FRISCO, Texas - The Lamar University men's and women's golf programs had a great month in March on the links and were handsomely rewarded with two Cardinals being named the Athletes of the Month for the Southland Conference, as announced by the league office Wednesday.

Senior Casey Clendenon was named the men's athlete while junior Therese Nilsson earned the award for the second consecutive month for the women.

Clendenon, from Katy, TX, posted a 72.1 scoring average over three events in which he finished among the top-5 in two of them and tied for 14th with an even-par score in the other.

Turned in three sub-par rounds with a pair of 69s. Tied for 5th at the General Jim Hackler Championships with a 74-76-71-221. Tied for 5th at the Border Olympics with a 73-69-73-215 score, and tied for 14th at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate with a 73-71-69-213.

Lamar posted top-6 finishes in all three events with a runner-up showing at the Border Olympics.

Nilsson, hailing from Vellinge, Sweden, turned in a pair of top-10 finishes in two tournaments, including earning medalist honors over teammate Hillary Zeigler at the Lamar/Sam Houston State Invitational - an event which featured five of the eight SLC schools.

She posted a 74.25 scoring average in her four rounds and fired rounds of 73-70 for a one-under 143 in her win in Huntsville. Also tied for seventh at the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational and was tied for the highest finishing SLC competitor. Led Lamar to a 19-shot victory in the Lamar/SHSU Invitational and a fifth-place finish at the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational.
