Lamar To Host SLC Women's Golf Championship Beginning Monday

April 21, 2008

Live Scoring! - Lamar tees off at 9:30 am CT

The Lamar Cardinals will play host to the 2008 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship Monday-Wednesday at Beaumont Country Club.

This will be the second time Lamar has hosted the league's premier women's golf event. The inaugural championship in 2002 was also played at BCC. However, the course underwent a $2 million renovation in 2004 as every tee box, fairway, bunker and green was reconstructed, and new drainage and irrigation systems were installed.

Sam Houston State won the 2007 title finishing 13 strokes ahead of Lamar. The Lady Cardinals have won three titles, including back-to-back crowns in 2005 and 2006. Texas State won the first-ever league championship in 2002, followed by Lamar and Sam Houston State.

When play begins on Monday at 8 a.m., two of the last three individual champions will be on the course. Lamar's Hillary Zeigler and Therese Nilsson have won or shared medalist honors in each of the last three events. Zeigler won the 2005 crown, while Nilsson won in 2006 and tied for the 2007 title before losing in a playoff.

Central Arkansas and Nicholls State will be paired together for the first five groups from 8:00-8:32 a.m., followed by McNeese State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA from 8:40-9:20 a.m., with Lamar, Sam Houston State and Texas State from 9:30-10:10 a.m.

Admission is free to the championship.
