Lamar Falls in Home Finale to Stephen F. Austin, 3-0
Oct. 28, 2007 BEAUMONT - Lauren Peterson and Carrie Mrazek both had good scoring opportunities for the Lady Cardinals, but Lamar University was unable to convert in losing to Stephen F. Austin, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference women's soccer action at Cardinal Stadium. Lamar, who was playing its final home game of the season, dropped to 0-16 overall and 0-7 in SLC play. SFA improved to 9-4-2 and 5-1-1 in SLC play to retain at least a share of first-place in the league standings. The Lady Cardinals close out the regular season next weekend on the road with games at Texas-San Antonio Friday and at Texas State Sunday. "For what ever reason, we lost some focus in the first six minutes and last six minutes of the second half," said Lamar coach Matthew Dillon. "We've talked about trying to play consistently. When you lose concentration, even for just a few minutes, that's when goals are scored and outcomes are decided. "We're a young team and you're going to have some of those things happen. You just have to keep learning from the experience. I thought we played a very good first half. We played hard all game and had some good scoring chances. It just wasn't meant to be." After a scoreless first half, Kelli Wilson put the Ladyjacks on the board with an unassisted goal at 51:21 of the second half. Lamar goalkeeper Kelsie Binetti stopped Erika Palmacci's initial shot on goal, but was unable to hold on to the ball. Wilson put the ball in the back of the net on the rebound. Wilson scored her second goal of the game at 86:19 off a free kick from Jenna Turner, who picked up an assist on the goal. Palmacci closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 89:14 when she outdueled a pair of Lady Cardinals defenders in front of the goal and slipped a shot past Binetti.
Peterson had a chance to give Lamar the lead in the first half, but her shot from about 10 feet went just wide left of the goal. Mrazek also had a chance to tie the game, but SFA goalkeeper made a nice save to stop the threat. Freshman Ericka Predmore had two shots, including one on goal, to lead the Lady Cardinals. Junior Aline Pugliesi also had a shot on goal for Lamar. Binetti made 10 saves for Lamar while Crystin Pactor made three saves for SFA. Palmacci led SFA with eight shots, including six on goal. Wilson also had eight shots, including five on goal. SFA out shot Lamar 35 to six, including 13-3 in shots on goal. The Lady Cardinals committed nine fouls compared to four by SFA. The Ladyjacks attempted four corner kicks to Lamar's one. |
