Lamar Women's Tennis Downs Texas State 6-1

Results

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team continued their stellar start to the 2008 season and Southland Conference play with a 6-1 win over Texas State at the Cardinals Courts Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Lady Cardinals improve to 7-1 on the year and 4-0 in Southland Conference play. Texas State falls to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the loss.

Lamar began the match by sweeping the Bobcats in doubles to gain an early 1-0 advantage. Andrea Martinez and Mariaryeni Gutierrez took down Andrea Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz 8-4 at No. 1, Maria Gutierrez and Manijee Ashrafi defeated Ali Gulida and Sumarie Muller 8-3 at No. 2 and Kaltrina Harbuzi and Salina Aranda posted an 8-4 win over Rabea Hartman and Mackenzie Farmer at No. 3.

In singles play Martinez coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Giraldo at No. 1 and Mariaryeni Gutierrez outlasted Hartman 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 in the No. 2 spot. At No. 4 singles Maria Gutierrez defeated Chafitz by retirement after winning the first set 6-4, Ahsrafi took down Gulida 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 and Anahita Jagtiani downed Muller 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6.

The Bobcats only point of the match came from the match at No. 3 singles as Ashley Ellis handed Harbuzi a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 loss.
 

 

The Lady Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday morning when they host New Mexico State at the Cardinal Courts at 10:00.
