Lady Cardinals Volleyball Rolls Past Islanders 3-0

BEAUMONT - Behind a dominant triple double performance by setter Adrianne Meengs, the Lamar University volleyball team moved one step closer to a Southland Conference championship with a 3-0 win over the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi at McDonald Gym.

The Lady Cardinals improve to 23-8 on the year and 14-1 in SLC play with the win. They will play the final match of the regular season when they take on UT San Antonio on Saturday at 1 p.m. at McDonald Gym. With a win over the Roadrunners the Lady Cards would capture the conference title and the No. 1 seed in the SLC tournament. The Islanders fall to 7-21 on the year and 4-11 in SLC play with the loss.

The Lady Cardinals left little doubt from the beginning of game one that they would roll past the Islanders, posting a team hitting percentage of .308 while holding TAMUCC to just .067 in a 30-21 win. Lamar was led by Courtney Mitchell's five kills with a .833 hitting percentage, while Kaci Brewer chipped in with four kills.

In game two the Lady Cardinals battled the Islanders to a 9-9 tie before beginning to pull away. They opened up as much as a seven point lead at 26-19 and coasted to a 30-25 win. They were led by Meengs five kills and 11 assists with Brewer again adding four kills.

In game three Lamar jumped out to an eight point lead midway through the game and cruised to a 30-18 win to close out the match. Meengs and Genevieve Gladle led LU offensively with five kills apiece while the team posted a .327 hitting percentage.

For the match Meengs led LU with 13 kills, 32 assists and 16 digs while hitting a match-high .476. It was her fifth triple double of the season, which ties her for the most in the Southland Conference. Seniors Molli Abel and Mitchell each contributed nine kills apiece with Mitchell hitting .444 and Abel posting a .421 hitting percentage.
 

 

The Lady Cardinal defense was led by Andrea Hamilton's 19 digs while Destiny Mason collected 12 digs, As a team Lamar out dug Corpus 65 to 59.
