Lamar Harriers Finish Cross Country Season Strong at NCAA Championship

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Three Lamar University athletes took on the top cross country runners in the country on Monday afternoon at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country National Championship at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Sophomore Francis Kasagule earned All American honors for the second time in his career, running to a 24th place finish. The Gayhza, Uganda native ran the 10, 000 meter course in a time of 30:20.6, improving on his 29th place finish from a year ago by 1:14. Last year Kasagule, the only runner in school history to earn All American honors in cross country, ran the 10 K course in a time of 31:34.9. "Francis ran a great race today," cross country coach Sita Waru-Ewell said. "He has proved he is one of the best in the NCAA by earning all American honors for the second time and improved his championship performance by a minute and 15 seconds. He's run very well all season and this is a great way to finish the year." In the women's race senior Clerc Koenck, a native of Anacoco, La., ran to a 114th place finish with a 21:40.6 performance over 6,000 meters. The 114th place finish is the best finish for a Lamar University women's runner at the NCAA championship meet. Junior Renee Graham, a native of Hawera, New Zealand, ran to a 130th place finish in a time of 21:45.9. Graham improved on her championship time for the third straight year, topping her previous best of 22:20.7 which she ran a year ago. It was also her second straight year to finish in the top 130 runners.
"Clerc and Renee did a great job all season long, and this was a wonderful way to cap off the year," Waru-Ewell said. "As a senior, you can't ask for much more than the way Clerc has capped off a very successful cross country career. Renee has laid the groundwork for her senior year as well. Three trips to nationals and all three times she has gotten better." |
